Get Wisdom! (2)

Proverbs 4:5-7
Get wisdom! Get understanding!
Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you;
Love her, and she will keep you.
Wisdom is the principal thing;
Therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding.

Blaise Pascal said in his pensees that “All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves.” I agree with him. All men want to be happy. This longing for pleasure is not bad, but good. Faith in Christ and glorifying God brings pleasure to us. We receive happiness from that. Thus it is good to pursue happiness. But what’s this got to do with the title, “Get Wisdom”?

In this meditation I’m going to deal with the importance of getting wisdom.

The reason why it’s important is because by wisdom we obtain true and eternal happiness. Proverbs 3:13, “Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding.” In Proverbs 8:34-36 wisdom herself says, “Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoever finds me finds life, and obtains favor from the Lord; but he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; all those who hate me love death.” Wisdom results in life. If we do not pursue wisdom it will result in death. Blessed is the man who does seek wisdom. They will obtain favour from God. So seeking wisdom is a matter of life and death. Also, the eternal happiness that all people seek will only be found by those who get wisdom.

It must be pointed out that eternal happiness is different from whatever ungodly happiness is found in this life. Proverbs 15:21 tells us that “Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment.” People make substitutes for happiness because they do not have the wisdom to seek it in God. People seek happiness in riches, fame, records, drinking and eating, television, social media etc. But these things do not bring lasting happiness. It ultimately leaves them unsatisfied and thus unhappy. The true satisfying happiness is found only in wisdom and understanding. Therefore it is vitally important that we “get wisdom!”
