Education is a blessing. Especially God-centred education.
However we have a responsibility to take advantage of this blessing. This
involves a few biblical truths relating to knowledge.
Scripture makes it evident that those who are wise seek to
grow in knowledge. Proverbs 15:14 says, “The heart of him who has understanding
seeks knowledge, But the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness.” See also
Proverbs 2:1-6; 18:15, 22:17, and 23:12.
Not only will those who study and increase in knowledge be
rewarded but also those who do not do so will be punished (2 Thessalonians
2:10).
We are commanded by Jesus to love God with our minds. “Jesus
said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all
your soul, and with all your mind.’ This
is the first and great commandment” (Matthew 22:37,38).
Without God all thinking and knowledge is worthless. “Although
they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became
futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened” (Romans
1:21,28).
We are also commanded to be mature in our thinking.
“Brethren, do not be children in understanding … in understanding be mature” (1
Corinthians 14:20).
The implications of these passages are huge. We must place
education on the same level as knowing God. And that’s very high up.
In order to gain this knowledge and understanding, we must
read. Read God’s Word, read theological studies, read ‘Christian fiction’ if
you think that’ll help. But read about the One who created you.
For those who are still taking part in full-time education,
learn to read well while you are still there. The good readers are not
dependant on a learning environment or being in or out of school for growth in
knowledge and wisdom. Great books are available in almost every bookstore, in
almost every library. The reader who has trained themselves to read actively
and well and who wishes to grow wiser does not enslave themselves to the TV,
computer, iPod or radio. And it will be they who will have a lifetime of
spiritual growth ahead of them. Learn to read and it will hold you in good stead
for the rest of your life.
Not only must we read but also ponder what we read. Slow
down and meditate on your reading. Think about it and ask questions. Grow in
your learning by your inquisitiveness.
Finally also discuss your reading and meditation. Start up
or join a study group where you can come together and study not only God’s Word
but also rich doctrinal books. Together with others show your passion and
appreciation for the truth.
Grow in your knowledge for God!
"Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding
in all things." (2 Timothy 2:7)
