“And take the helmet of salvation”
Satan can attack us by influencing those things around us, like he did to Job (Job 2:7). However he also influences our mind (John 13:2; 2 Corinthians 4:4), and thus Paul commands us to put on armour to guard against that. The armour we use to protect our thoughts is salvation.
Paul borrowed this metaphor from Isaiah 59:17. Isaiah says that the LORD has “a helmet of salvation on His head.”
Paul, however, charges us to take it and wear it. Roman soldiers had their armour handed to them by their superiors, and thereafter it was their responsibility to wear it. Similarly we are commanded to take salvation, to accept it as a free gift from God – and to recognise that even the hand that goes out to take the helmet from God is His gracious gift (Eph 2:8).
It is also our responsibility to wear it. In the midst of hardship, persecution and temptation we can know we are saved. We have hope in the midst of hardships, because Christ has granted us salvation.
It is important for us to put on salvation. We would easily give up this spiritual war if it wasn't for our salvation. That's what can give us strength to continue the fight. We know that what God will complete what He has begun in us (Ps 138:8; Phil 1:6).
Like the rest of the Armour of God, salvation is not only a defensive weapon but also an offensive one. As we fight for the furtherance of God's kingdom we tell our neighbour of the good news of salvation. “Sing to the LORD, bless His name; Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day” (Psalm 96:2). In our proclamation of salvation we “water the earth and make it bring forth and bud” (Isaiah 55:10). God will make our proclamation of salvation fruitful (Isaiah 55:11). Thus salvation is also an offensive weapon for the Christian soldier.
Salvation is a precious gift. Take it. Use it. Guard yourself from Satan's blows. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2). Remember God's promises to you and be protected and encouraged. Declare His promises of salvation as a powerful weapon for God's kingdom.
2 Corinthians 6:1-2:
"We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says:
