There are a multitude of Biblical passages that promise that God will be with us and not forsake us in anything in this life. The Father said, through the prophet Isaiah, “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). Jesus Himself said, in Matthew 28:20, “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age”.
We are also promised that the Holy Spirit will be with us: “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you” (John 14:16-18).
See also Matthew 18:20, 2 Corinthians 6:16, Hebrews 13:5-6, and Revelation 3:20.
However, God does not only have communion with us, but it follows that we should have communion with Him. This is the foundation for meditation. Christian meditation is communion with God through His Word. This communion is invaluable. It is delightful. It is imperative. Why?
The source of life is God’s Word. We have been born again through the Word of God (James 1:18, 1 Peter 1:23). The Word of God has words of eternal life (John 6:68). The flesh profits nothing, but rather it is the gospel that gives life (John 6:63).
The source of knowledge is God’s Word. “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple” (Psalm 19:7).
The source of faith is God’s Word. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). God’s Word has been written so that we can believe that Jesus is the Saviour (John 20:31).
The source of happiness and fruitfulness is God’s Word. God’s law is delightful (Psalm 1:2; 119:70, 92). Those who keep His law “shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper” (Psalm 1:3; Jeremiah 17:7-8).
Thus meditation on God’s Word will give you life, knowledge, faith, fruitfulness and happiness. “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes,” (Psalm 19:7-8).
So meditate on God’s law and pray: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord” (Psalm 19:14).
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things” (Philippians 4:8).
“[The] Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:8-9)
