Our Citizenship is in Heaven

Philippians 3:20-21
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.

Paul quotes from Isaiah in 1 Corinthians 2:9,
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
What we shall experience in heaven is beyond our imagination. But God in His Word has given us some clues, some very encouraging indications, of what is in store for us. Coming from the Bible, these things are absolutely authoritative, absolutely true.

The Old Testament uses Jerusalem or Zion as an image of heaven (Ps 48:2; Heb 12:22). Isaiah 51:11 gives us an image of the future:
So the ransomed of the Lord shall return,
And come to Zion with singing,
With everlasting joy on their heads.
They shall obtain joy and gladness;
Sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

John begins his gospel saying, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory” (John 1:14). However Jesus says in John 17:24, “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me.” Yes, while Jesus was on earth His glory was clearly demonstrated. However He makes it clear that this was only a foretaste—a shadow—of His true glory. His complete glory will be revealed to us in heaven.

The Bible tells us that in heaven, and in the world to come, there are going to be no diseases, no calamities, no depression, no guilt, no shame, no misery, no pain, no sinning, no being sinned against (Revelation 21:4). There is going to be perfect joy, perfect peace, perfect righteousness, and intimate fellowship with Jesus (Rev 22:3). We are going to see God and we will eat of the tree of life in the paradise of God (Rev 2:7). We will not be hurt by the second death (Rev 2:11). He will give us hidden manna and a white stone which only He and we know the name on it (Rev 2:17). He will give us authority over the nations and make us the morning star (Rev 2:26, 28). He will never blot our names out of the book of life; He will confess us before the Father and His angels (Rev 3:5). He will make us pillars in the temple of His God and we will never go out of it (Rev 3:12). He’ll write His name on our forehead (Rev 22:4), He will grant us to sit with Him on His throne as He has conquered and sat down with the Father on His throne (Rev 3:21).

We will be before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will dwell among us. We shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike us, nor any heat; for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd us and lead us to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from our eyes (Revelation 7:15-17).

“And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations” (Revelation 22:1-2).

“I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts” (Rev 21:6).
“And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely” (Rev 22:17).
