The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

We often look back at the story of the fall into sin and marvel at the consequences that one sin had on all creation from then on. We wonder if we would have done the same if we were in a similar situation. We sometimes even despise Adam for what he did.
Well, every day we do the same thing as he did.
God created one tree that was forbidden out of many that were “pleasant to the sight and good for food” (Genesis 3:9). God had given Adam and Eve a million trees full of pleasure and goodness and life. There was no reason to eat of that forbidden tree. Until Satan came along and blinded Adam and his wife.
Every day Satan comes and blinds us. He puts sin in front of us and says the same thing he said to Eve: “What God says is not best for you. He’s not a loving Father who gives everything that’s best for you. Sin is more pleasant. Sin is fun. Sin gives you true life!”
When Adam and Eve ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil they were saying to God, “I know better than You. I am wiser than You. I know what’s best, and You don’t let me have it. Therefore I’m going to reject you and I’m just going to take it anyway.”
Every time you sin, you’re saying the exact same thing to God. You’re saying the same thing Satan said to Eve.
But every time you reject Satan’s invitations to sin you are submitting to God, being thankful for His generosity, and trusting Him. You are eating of every tree except the tree in the midst of the garden. You will be eating of the trees that really are pleasant to the sight, good for food, and good for life!
Adam and Eve’s choice made them miserable (Genesis 3:8) and ultimately lead to their death (2:17). Not only that, but it also had repercussions on all their offspring. Again, the same applies for us today. If we choose to reject God’s guidance and His commands to us, we too will suffer death. And if our descendants do the same, so will they (Exodus 20:5; Numbers 14:18).
We must not forget, though, that God has given us this ability to eat from the tree of life. What was not granted to Adam has been granted to us through Christ’s death. He has opened up the way to the tree of life and God has revealed the path to it.
So in this life, don’t listen to Satan. Every time he whispers in your ear, think of Adam, and the consequences it had on his happiness. You’re not happy when you sin. Sin doesn’t give you life. Take from the tree of life and live forever!
